In September of 2006, a small group of St. Mary students founded a non-profit organization in Cusco, Peru. The organization is called Suyakuywan Yachusun. The name is Quechua and it means "Learning for Hope". The organization was founded in hopes of giving the students the opportunity to grow as Catholics and as global citizens, while at the same time improving the lives and the quality of education for underprivileged students and special needs students in both the urban center of Cusco, as well the greater province of Cusco. The focus of the project is on integrating technology and modern resources into classrooms in impoverished regions so that students in those areas can compete for jobs that require computer experience.

In October of 2006, we started our first project in the town of Sacaca, located fifteen minutes from Pisac (a major tourist destination in the Sacred Valley of the Incas). In just one year, we took a dilapidated and moldy school and helped to turn it into the best school in the region. First and foremost, we furnished the schools with two computers: every Friday we paid for a computer teacher to go the school and give the students basic computer lessons. Moreover, we repainted the interior and the exterior of the school, provided the students with basic school supplies, bought uniforms for the children and funded the building of a school greenhouse and orchard. At the same time, we bought basic cleaning supplies, re-sanded and revarnished all of the desks in the school and paid for brand new soccer nets for the school. En February 2008, we establised contact with the principal of a school in a village called Yanahuara and we have already started the renovation process in the school. We helped pay for the renovation of their bathroom facilities. We have redone the floors of their classrooms, we have helped to renovate the outside of the school, we have helped them to put in a school garden and we pay for computer classes at the school. Finally we are now in the process of adopting our third and ourth schools in the community of sunkkho.

Up until this point, the money for the project has come from good old fashioned fundraising. As a teacher, I have been working with students and members of the community. We have gone door to door collecting spare change, sold lpies, hosted church bake sales and hosted various other activities.

For this year's fundraiser we are currently organizing a 10 km walk. The walk will take place on Saturday, May 9th. the walk will begin at 10:00 in the morningand it will conclude around 1:00 p.m. after the walk there will be a barbecue, dance lessons and soccer. If it rains the day of the walk, we will walk indoors. The theme for the walk will be the March of Fools, so participants are encouraged to wear bright colours and costumes.

Anyone interested in participating in the 10 km walk, he/she must fundraise a minimum fo $20 through community sponsorship. The permission form must be submitted to Mr. McLaughlin in room 111 of St. Mary's Catholic School in Pickering by May 7th. Money can be handed in before the walk or the day of the walk. On the day of the walk we will also be collecting used school supplies and donations.

The students participating in this event have a list of the items that we are hoping to collect that day. In May of 2009, Dr. Simone has agreed to help us ship a container to Peru, in support of schools in the Cusco region. (For those of you who do not know, St Mary sponsors 5 schools in the Cusco region of Peru). Our goal is to fill this shipping container with school supplies or school related materials. We would like to invite members of the community to join us in our support of these schools in Peru.

If you are participating in the 10 K walk and/or you would like to make a donation from the list below, it would be greatly appreciated.

The items needed are: pens and pencils, pencil crayons or crayons, glue, scissors, paper or notebooks, colouring books, calculators, protractors or rulers, school bags or pencil cases, used laptop computers, eye glasses, musical instruments, soccer balls\Volley balls\bicycles, paints and paint brushes. You can bring your donations to the school the day of the walk.
